Step inside the Parran House, circa 1792: five bedrooms, three kitchens, and two centuries of character in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Offered at $899,000.

Walk the length of German Street on a quiet morning, and Shepherdstown tells you most of what you need to know before your coffee has cooled. Brick sidewalks, doorways that have stood for two centuries, and the kind of small-town rhythm where the shopkeeper already knows your order. As West Virginia's oldest town, settled in 1730 and chartered in 1762, this is a place that rewards people who notice the details. So we were glad to see one of its landmarks come to market with our friend and colleague Morgan Boyer.

A home with a long memory

The Parran House dates to circa 1792, and it carries its age with grace. Inside, you'll find what early-American homes do so well: hand-hewn beams overhead, exposed stone walls, deep windowsills, and wide-plank floors that have held generations of footsteps. Fireplaces anchor both the living and dining rooms, and the updates throughout have been handled thoughtfully, so the character stays intact while the kitchens and systems feel current. That's a rare balance, and not an easy one to strike.

Room to live, and room to host

This is where the home shows its range. The main residence keeps a classic flow: a large living room and a separate dining room on the main level, an updated kitchen, and an upstairs with a generous primary bedroom, two more bedrooms, and a laundry room of its own.

From there, the floor plans tell a richer story than any bedroom count can. Beyond the main house are two fully renovated apartments, each self-contained. One is a full suite with its own kitchen, family room, bedroom, bath, and a private deck. The other is a lower-level apartment with a kitchen, bedroom, bath, and a recreation room that opens to a patio. All told, the property offers five bedrooms, four full baths, and three full kitchens: space for extended family, a quiet retreat for guests, or a source of rental income, given the steady draw of Shepherd University and the town's year-round visitors. Out back, a cedar-shake carriage house with a two-car garage and a sizable loft above leaves room to grow.

The Shepherdstown life

Part of the appeal of living in Shepherdstown, West Virginia is how much sits within a short walk. Restaurants and cafés, the Shepherd University campus, the C&O Canal towpath along the Potomac, and riverside parks all fold easily into an ordinary Tuesday. It's a community with deep roots in the region's colonial and Civil War history, and a present-day calendar full of festivals, theater, and farmers-market mornings. For buyers weighing the Eastern Panhandle, many of them coming from our home base across the river in Loudoun and Hunt Country, it's an easy place to picture the next chapter.

Properly positioned for its next chapter

A home like the Parran House asks for the right owner, someone who values what's been preserved and what it makes possible. That's Morgan's story to tell, and she tells it well. Listed at $899,000, the home is represented by Morgan Boyer of Hunt Country Sotheby's International Realty, where you'll find the full story and photography.

If you're exploring historic homes across Shepherdstown, Charles Town, and the wider Eastern Panhandle, or wondering how a move across the river might suit the life you're refining, we'd be glad to be your sounding board.

P.S. Our favorite detail here is the stonework, the kind of quiet craftsmanship that lingers long after the tour ends.
